Goethe-Institut Nigeria is proud to announce the seven successful projects to be funded in its 2018 Open Call to Support and Connect local initiatives in the Nigerian cultural scene.

Overall, a substantial number of high-quality projects were submitted from which only a few could be supported. The final selection spans the creative spectrum of music, film, theatre, arts journalism, poetry, gaming and the local comic scene.
Goethe-Institut intends to continue its Support and Connect Grants, and wishes previous and potential applicants better luck next time.
 

About the Selected Projects

Film Sundays Photo: Goethe-Institut / Film Sundays FILM SUNDAYS is a monthly screening of mostly independent films with interesting, controversial or enlightening topics and engaging plots with which the Nigerian audience can relate. 
Too often, Nigerians are exposed only to the ‘mainstream’ Hollywood movies, many of which have very little to offer in terms of originality in story and content at the cinemas. This is why it is the responsibility of filmmakers and film lovers to share independent films with each other and as many Nigerians as possible, so as to spark conversations and discussions about different societal issues that ‘mainstream’ movies are inclined to steer clear of. We invite international and local filmmakers to participate and take part in Q&A sessions after each film screening.
The events are free of charge and located centrally to ensure that everyone can participate and enjoy local and international independent films.
 
Film Sundays is managed by Chuka and Olamide Ejorh. Chuka has 12 years of experience working on award winning TV shows, drama series, documentaries and films in South Africa and Nigeria and is regarded as the top film editor in Nigeria. Chuka presently owns BLINK STUDIOS, a company which provides post-production services – editing, colour grading, sound editing and design, and post production supervision and consultation. Chuka is also a member of CICAE, an international association of Arthouse cinema exhibitors. Olamide is an Urban Activist – researcher, writer and artist. She is currently involved in governance and social issues within the urban environment of Lagos and is an advocate for sustainable transportation and social engagement within street spaces. In the last 6 years she has managed and coordinated projects in the UK, South Africa and Nigeria, working with a variety of clients to ensure relevant knowledge is shared with the right audience.
Golden Tones Photo: Goethe-Institut / Golden Tones The project documents the lives and works of 12 male and female evergreen music stars who are still living. Because documentation was, and remains an issue in Nigeria, you can hardly find in-depth publications that analyses and discusses the lives and works of a majority of these elderly and talented musicians except for the occasional newspaper interviews and academic researches by music scholars. Most information available is often anecdotal and debatable and becomes even more controversial after the death of such musical talents.
“Golden Tones” is a series of in-depth conversations with the selected artists that will be documented and presented online, on websites and a Youtube channel, as well as in book form. The artists include Sir Victor Olaiya, Evangelist Ebenezer Obey Fabiyi, Sir Orlando Julius, Sir Victor Uwaifo, Alhaja Kubura Alaragbo, General Ayinla Kollington and Queen Salawa Abeni. Others are Sir Shina Peters, Jimi Solanke, Uncle Tunji Oyelana, Pa Chris Ajilo and King Sunny Ade.
Documenting the artists and their works will be invaluable for the education and information of the public, preservation of the musicians’ specific legacies, and the cultural legacies of Nigeria. But because documenting the music and lives of these veterans scattered across Nigeria will be a herculean task requiring huge time and financial resources, “Golden Tones” has been streamlined to just three genres, Highlife, Fuji and Juju found in the South West, the homeland of the Yoruba.
Beneficiaries of the project include the general public, students, and teachers of music, fans, ethnographers, historians, and scholars.  Essentially, the project will properly and accurately document the lives, careers, challenges, and experiences of the veteran stars to the younger generation and the world at large. Most importantly, it is securing their places in history.
Lagos Comic-Con Photo: Goethe-Institut / Lagos Comic-Con The annual Lagos Comic Convention aka "Lagos Comic-Con" which began in 2012 is a non-profit convention, which serves as a platform for the exchange of ideas and business opportunities in a sector that is dominantly youthful and urban.
It is an event that brings together stakeholders in the comics, animation, gaming, books, VR and film industry. The role of the Lagos Comic-Con since its inception in 2012 has been to celebrate successes of practitioners in the Creative Industry, i.e comics, animation, gaming, film and virtual reality, and to encourage broader participation as well as to support the building of knowledge and capacity necessary to strengthen the sector and ultimately create jobs. This has involved working with creative professionals, policy makers, stakeholders and other industry experts to help facilitate wider understanding and awareness of the issues and opportunities available.
Lagos Comic-Con has grown in attendance from 300 participants in 2012 to 4,500 in 2017, with attendance predominantly youth between the ages of 15-40 years old. The 2018 edition will take place on September 15 at the Landmark Events Center in Lekki, Lagos. The theme is “Aspire, Dream, Prosper”. This year, there will be 5 distinct zones, namely Comic, Animation, Book, Film and Creative Business Zones. Each zone will host several master classes that will feature prominent speakers in the relevant industry. Aside from the master classes in the zones, there are competitions like Costume Competition, Comic Pitch Competition, Animation Pitch competition, Gaming Competition and Book Pitch Competition. As always, the Comic Panel FIST Awards would hold on the main stage of the exhibition hall
Lagos International Poetry Festival will bring some of the biggest writers, poets and artists to Lagos for a week of workshops, conversations and performances, establishing itself as one of the continent’s annual art and culture highlights. The festival will draw a diverse range of more than 50 writers and thinkers from over ten cities of the world for conversations, workshops and performances.

Lagos International Poetry Festival returns in 2018, from Oct. 31st – November 4th, with the theme “Wide awake”, an emphasis of the growing importance of vigilance in a post-truth era.
As a rousing wave of discontenting voices tip political and social power structures, from the global north to the south, and reinvigorate conversations on accountability, transparency and social justice, staying alive to the issues has become not only vital but cool. How the concerns of awakening collective consciousness and mediating justified paranoia animates art will be one of the preoccupations of this year’s festival.
This year the festival also incorporates a strong performance element with five scheduled performance events, the flagship performance being Finding Home. Finding Home is a spoken word theatre production that explores the urgent questions of migration, rising nationalism, otherness, and the language that frames them. It follows a cast of storytellers through fractured lives and national crises, into perilous routes, and across borders, as they try to build bridges where political expediency has erected walls. Finding Home combines poetry, theatre and music to deliver a compelling narrative of identity, displacement, loss and triumph.
Also at the heart of Lagos International Poetry Festival is the centrality of nurturing young voices and new ideas. The festival will run a yearlong series of youth development workshops focusing on creative writing and visual storytelling, and will launch a creative writing prize for students called the J.P. Clark Prize for Poetry, named after the iconic first generation African poet.
 
Theatre Arise Project Foto: Theatre Arise Theatre Arise is an advocacy initiative created by ONESiX Productions to muster professional response to the death of live theatre and the decline of the Nigerian theatre culture. It was launched with a Live Theatre Advocacy Night at the French Cultural Centre, Lagos & subsequently at the National Council for Arts & Culture, Lagos. Both nights featured a variety of performances which included dance, drama skits & music by Zulezoo, compered by Tee-A, Princess & Kofi.
Advocacy talks aimed at increasing awareness on the viability & the potency of live theatre were delivered by late Ambassador Segun Olusola, Tosan Ugbeye, Wole Oguntokun, Seyi Fasuyi, Toyin Akinosho, amongst others. The advocacy included the need to inspire students of theatre in training professionally.
In 2015, ONESiX Productions in collaboration with Oxygen Koncepts designed the Theatre Arise University Annual Tour in view of bridging the gap between students in training and the professionals in practice. The initiative commenced in 2015 with a performance tour of Femi Osofisan’s ORIKI OF A GRASSHOPPER and workshop sessions for students. The performance stops included Redeemer’s University, Ede and Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife.
The 2016 Theatre Arise project was designed for young females interested in pursuing a career in Technical Theatre. Facilitators included Najite Dede, Matthew Yusuf, amongst others. The 4 weeks practical workshop held at Freedom Park Lagos and its participants included Tito Ibitola-Aderemi, Aribisala Ayobami, Kayode Titilayo, Nweye Joy, amongst others.
The Theatre Arise project 2018 is a tour of Nigerian Universities designed to foster the traveling Theatre culture in Nigeria and bridge the gap between students in training and professionals in practice, with special focus on identifying a crop of female students interested in pursuing a career in Technical Theatre. The tour will feature performance stops of Toyin Oshinaike’s Wat’s Dis All About and workshop sessions.
TSA Art Writing Master Class Photo: Goethe-Institut / TSA The arts in Nigeria and a number of other West African countries have become vibrant in the last five years, gathering attention now more than ever. In spite of this artistic boom, there are still very few platforms reporting on the arts and even fewer writers with critical perceptions. Perhaps, this is a result of the art education in most African countries and the limited presence of alternative learning spaces. In Nigeria for instance, art schools do not have art criticism or critical writing as core courses in their curricula. Instead, the schools focus mainly on teaching technical skills. Beyond this, there is a paucity of dialogue between the old generation of art professionals such as writers, historians and critics, and the young art enthusiasts. Thus, knowledge is seldom passed on, and the new art scenes lack the depth that is required to critically engage their arts.

To correct this deficiency, TSA Cultural Foundation organizes a 5-day Art Writing Master Class designed to drive interactions between accomplished art professionals and new art writers, and enable methodical thinking and writing in the different art scenes in West Africa. Each workshop will be taught by a distinguished and active international art writer, critic or historian working in the academic, curatorial and media fields of art. Application for the workshop will be open to beginners and experienced art writers and journalists from West African Countries. The master class workshop series is designed to run for a period of three to five years.
West African Gaming Expo Photo: Goethe-Institut / West African Gaming Expo The West African Gaming Expo 2018 (WAGE 18) is the first and only technology conference and exhibition in West Africa focusing on animation, video, mobile games and related products.  WAGE provides the best, brightest, and most innovative professionals in the interactive entertainment industry with publicity and media exposure, product and service sale opportunity.
Here at WAGE, we believe that by creating networking opportunities, educating developers, connecting content creators with buyers, bringing end users closer to the creators, and raising finance for industry stakeholders, we can substantially grow the African gaming industry and make it a force in the global gaming industry. 
WAGE is an annual event, currently in its 5th year. Since conception in 2014, we have gradually and systematically helped developed the African gaming industry through various activities such as:
 
  • Pitch A Game: Developers under the ages of 18 are given the opportunity to demonstrate or exhibit a game they have created
  • Conference: WAGE conference has educated thousands of attendees on subjects ranging from raising finance, game development tools, monetization and co-creation.
  • Exhibition: WAGE exhibition enables developers and publishers from all around the globe to showcase games they have created, network with fellow developers, Organize Esport tournament, Product giveaways and sell their games to Telecommunications and retailers
  • E-Sport tournaments: WAGE events have organized over 10 Esport tournaments giving out millions of Naira in cash prize.
  • Publicity for Game developers: We work closely with media houses both in and out of Africa to bring our games closers to the end users.
  • Hackathon: WAGE Hackathon is where developers over the ages of 18, have 48 hours to build a game, present it, and exhibit for WAGE attendees. 
Through these activities, we are not only lowering the barrier of entry into the global gaming industry for locally based developers, we are also doing the same for stakeholders outside the continent interested in the African region.
