Goethe-Institut Nigeria cordially invites you to the first edition of Uncensored: How Free Are the Arts?
A panel discussion with
Mike Asukwo,
Jelili Atiku, and
Ayodele Olofintuade.
Moderated by
Mathew Oyedele.
Throughout modern Nigerian history, dissenting artistic voices have elicited different shades of repressive responses from state agents. Yet, as we gradually descend towards an Orwellian society where public speech is constantly monitored, the dynamics of public art engagement are changing with different layers of filters that limit the artist's ability to reach their public.
What are the convergences between artistic freedom and the fundamental human right to freedom of speech? What are those issues that artists can't explore in public spaces? How can artists, curators and institutions navigate difficult political terrains to produce and present art that speaks truth to power? How public are public spaces?
The panel discussion brings together Nigerian visual and literary artists whose practice engage with these complexities to discuss how artists can navigate the difficult terrain of political art in Nigeria and to share their experiences. This discussion forms part of a larger trans-regional multimedia project that aims to bring together artists from Nigeria, Brazil, and Pakistan to engage with questions around the freedom of the arts. These conversations and accompanying exhibition will be available online at
