The Americans I Met is a photographic and oral history project that collects portraits of and conversations with people that photographer Viktor Hübner encountered during a series of cross-country hitchhiking trips in the United States. With only his camera, audio recorder, and a few provisions, he covered 41 states and over 16,000 miles from 2017 to 2019. Throughout Viktor’s travels, he embraced chance encounters and relied daily on the hospitality of people he met. As a result, the foreign traveler became an eye-witness to many Americans’ practical and spiritual lives and the bearer of many confidences. This document focuses on the people Viktor met on his travels, their words, their experiences, and, by extension, the Trump Era in which they lived.
Viktor Hübner, born in Germany in 1988, is a visual storyteller who captures the human experience through photography, sound recordings and written accounts. Raised in a family of ethnic Russian German repatriates, his early life was marked by identity turmoil, shaping his commitment to preserving stories for posterity. Hübner, who now lives in Norway, published The Americans I met in 2022 and has continued his passion for visual narratives ever since.
Hübner's insights are particularly interesting in light of the upcoming US election in November 2024. An expert shares her assessment of the current political situation in the USA in an introductory video statement. In a conversation, Hübner exchanges views with Victoria Kau. Victoria Kau is originally from Germany, but emigrated to Norway many years ago. In her podcast Nesten Norwegisch, which means ‘almost Norwegian’, she and her colleague Laura Herzig share their personal experiences of life as Germans in Norway.
