The Legend Of Rita
(Die Stille nach dem Schuss)

Director: Volker Schlöndorff, colour, 102 mins, 2000

Seduced by her sense of justice Rita Vogt becomes a member of a left-wing terrorist organisation in West Berlin in the 1970s. After shooting a policeman, she goes into hiding in the GDR, with state security giving her a new existence. Two worlds collide: western left-wing radical terrorism and eastern "real socialism". After the fall of the Wall 1989 Rita is not protected by the Stasi anymore and her terrorist past catches up with her. The Legend of Rita makes an exciting piece of German history, and the life of its central character, sensually tangible – a story that could only be possible in a country like Germany, which, during the Cold War, was divided into two frontline states.
