Goethe-Institut Philippines and the Vargas Museum invite everyone to a
lecture on upcycling with local advocates

Upcycle Philippines will shed light on their upcycling advocacies and share insights on how their communities contribute to upcycling initiatives in the country.
The lecture will be the closing activity of the exhibition Pure Gold – Upcycled! Upgraded! which runs at the Vargas Museum until 23 November 2019. The exhibition, an initiative of the IFA (Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen, the German institute for international relations), showcases 76 pieces of upcycled objects from 53 designers, and highlights the transformation of waste and unwanted by-products into objects of remarkable design and function.
About the Speakers
Idr. Wilhelmina “Willie” S. Garcia is a graduate of Interior Design at St. Scholastica’s College, Manila. She is a licensed interior designer and a member of PIID (Philippine Institute of Interior Design) since 2006. She attended social entrepreneurship at Youth Encounter Sustainability (YES) held in Armenia, Colombia. In 2007, she won the grand prize in interior design category “The Environment Shapes You” by Metrobank Arts and Design Excellence (MADE). She's one of the 11 women artists selected for the Artisan Residency in Sefrou, Morocco in 2014. She is an advocate of the environment and continues to create art pieces as her means to lessen wastes in different communities. Her beautiful furniture pieces and accessories have been exhibited in different events in the Philippines and even abroad – Paris, Belgium, Germany, and Japan.
Ma. Adavieve M. Lasam wears many hats but passionate in the things that she does as a wife, a mother, a writer, a teacher, and an environmental advocate. Teacher Ada, as she is fondly called by her students and colleagues, finished her bachelor's degree in Humanities with specialization in Development Education at the University of Asia and the Pacific and completed post-grad studies in Special Education at the University of the Philippines, Diliman. Currently, she is teaching children with autism and carries out upcycling activities with them. In line with her upcycling advocacy, she created an online community named Upcycle Philippines and aims to promote awareness on upcycling as a system for zero waste, a creative outlet, a tool for generating income and building communities and as a belief that it celebrates conscious living.
