Call for Workshop Participants

Within the framework program of “Digging Deep, Crossing Far_ 4Th Encounter: Lahore”, the Annemarie-Schimmel-Haus/Goethe-Institut Pakistan is calling artists, musicians, and scholars to participate in a workshop with the Berlin based sound artist Gilles Aubry.

Description:

The workshop deals with sound recordings from prisoners of war in the German “Halfmoon Camp”, who originally came from today's Pakistan and were recruited to fight for the British in World War I (1914-18). The 100 year old recordings are in Urdu, Balochi, Pashto, Punjabi and Hindustani and include tales, songs, personal stories and sample words. The short recordings are well preserved and come with questionnaires about each singer/narrator.

The main idea of the workshop is to engage with the recordings directly through listening in order to explore their sensual potential. How is it possible to attune to such recordings today, despite their problematic origin, and which worlds can emerge out of auditory experience? Questions related to possible interpretations of the recordings from various perspectives (cultural, historical, material and epistemological) will also be introduced and debated in the course of the workshop, including the problem of accessibility to such archives. The participants will be invited to elaborate short responses to the recordings, individually or in small groups, using the format of their choice (text, visual, sound, …).

To participate, please send us an e-mail stating your interest in the workshop and giving brief information on your background. There will be a sound system and a video projector on location. Please bring your own computer or other equipment needed for your practice. Participation is free but limited to 20, therefore we kindly ask you to register until February 23.

Gilles Aubry is a Swiss sound artist and researcher living in Berlin. His practice is based on an auditory approach of the real, informed by researches on cultural, material and historical aspects of sound production. Frequently combining audio sources such as location recordings, interviews, music recordings and archives, Aubry creates installations and performances. His works typically explore the relational and reflexive qualities of sound and listening while questioning problematic aspects of cultural representations. He has toured and exhibited internationally.

digging deep, crossing far relates international contemporary artistic positions to the historical phenomenon of the German „Halfmoon Camp“ in World War I (1914-18). This camp opens a complex time/space in which postcolonial, critical, de/constructive, geopolitical and media discourses are linked. For example, Germany's first mosque was built inside the camp for the Muslim POWs as part of the German-Ottoman „Jihad Programme“ which called all Muslims to fight against France, Great Britain and Russia. digging deep, crossing far involves contemporary artistic positions from India, Pakistan, Algeria, England and Germany. The project's 1st Encounter happened in Bangalore and Kochi, India, in December/January 2015/16, the 2nd Encounter in Karachi, Pakistan, in May 2016, the 3rd Encounter in Berlin, Germany, from September-November 2016.
