Tuesday Filmscreening Nosferatu – Phantom der Nacht

Directed by Werner Herzog (1978) | Original German Version with English subtitles, colour, 103 min.

Parting from Bram Stoker’s horror novel Dracula (1897) and Nosferatu (Directed by Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau, 1921/22), the famous silent film version of the book, Werner Herzog endeavors to recount the frequently adapted vampire tale anew, melding the images of the German classic with his own visual universe.
In the morning Jonathan, an estate agent dealer, learns that he has to set off immediately to distant Transylvania to deliver a sale deed to Count Dracula. Lucy is wrought with an evil foreboding. Before they say goodbye the two take a stroll by the sea. The landscape seems quiet and peaceful, a deceptive appearance given what is in store in the final sequence of the film. Jonathan rides through central Europe and arrives in a village on the edge of the Carpathians, unaware of what awaits him.
