"The future is here, it's just not evenly distributed yet."
- William Gibson
The Goethe-Institut and Electric South present „New Dimensions – Virtual Reality Africa“, a selection of Virtual Reality productions from Kenya, Senegal and Ghana. Each of these works offers a view of the vibrant, diverse and ever-changing cultural landscape of contemporary Africa.
Included is the VR work “Spirit Robot” by Ghanaian science fiction author and founder of the Afrocyberpunk website Jonathan Dotse who explored the Chale Wote Street Art Festival in Accra, which is driving an art renaissance in the city’s public spaces, using small 360 cameras and drones. Kenyan photographer Ng’endo Mukii produced a poetic city symphony on Nairobi “Nairobi Berries”, consisting of her lyrical voiceover alongside surreal, layered images of the city. Senegalese fashion designer Selly Raby Kane and Moustapha Diop present a magical 360 piece, in which a little girl is chosen to discover the invisible Dakar. Kenyan interdisciplinary artist Jim Chuchu, who already won an award at the Berlinale for his work “Stories of our Lives”, together with The Nest Collective created an interactive piece on black bodies created using volumetric video.
'New Dimensions’ is presented by Electric South and the Goethe-Institut, in cooperation with Big World Cinema, Blue Ice Docs and the Bertha Foundation.
