Berlin 2011: At the funeral of Denis "Panic" Paraceck old friends from past GDR times meet again and remember: Skateboarding was their great passion. The film conjures in many small episodes and in powerful pictures the eighties in Germany, when the skaters were mostly outsiders. Cheerful, defiant and far from the state and its production plans, the skateboarding stood for a lifestyle that did not fit into socialism - and yet had its stage right in the center of the capital, right on Alexanderplatz. THIS IS NOT CALIFORNIA formally retains this story as a documentary, but integrates numerous staged and fictional elements.
