A wave? A myth? A creative movement? Or just a group of film buffs making them? Is it a result of a system that support cinema production? Efficient film trainings? Or one rising from an established cinema culture? So many questions…..
What is certain is that there is an emergence of the Rwandese cinema, and its repercussions has resulted in the coining of the term “The Rwandese New Wave”, certainly from outside.
A increasing number of young, mostly self-taught filmmakers making a “Cinema d’auteur” in Rwanda is a fact. An experimentation of the cinema form and a personal vision are some of its many characteristics.
From a profound need of self-expression through images and sound, this emergence is rooted in the DIY spirit and a pragmatic, self-determination which embraces the digital audiovisual possibilities. Reliant on solidarity, the director/writers are almost always the producers of the films.
We invite for a conversation with a close look into what’s happening in the Rwandese film scene. The key speakers being active filmmakers of the scene. We will analyse its foundation and strengths, its fragilities and obstacles, and finally its future and sustainability.
The Talk is curated by Imitana Productions in collaboration with the Goethe Institut Rwanda, The Rwanda Film Office (RDB) and the CINIDB platform in the context of the Kigali Audio Visual Forum. The date will be communicated shortly.
