The Curators Academy
The Curators Academy addresses questions about curatorial practice in the performing arts. In the visual arts, there has been an intense discourse about curatorial concepts since the 1990s, whereas in the performing arts such a discourse is still in its infancy. In 2015 the SPIELART Festival and the Goethe-Institut responded to this deficit with the international theatre symposium “Show Me the World” on “curatorial questions in accordance with a global ethics of organizing” (Sigrid Gareis).
The Curators Academy joins forces with this response in an initiative aimed at freelance curators in Southeast Asia. Renowned theatre makers from Germany and communicate their practical knowledge to the participants in active exchange. Through workshops and hands-on exercises, results of previous discussions are transferred to regional contexts and critically reviewed for local applicability. What specific guidelines for action can be derived from what has been called an “ethics of curating”? What challenges confront actors in the performing arts in Southeast Asia, and what conclusions can be drawn from such considerations with respect to the international discourse? The Curators Academy focuses on knowledge transfer and the practical testing of theatre practice in a local context in the spirit of a practical cultural “translation”, acknowledging the asymmetries in the international theatre scene.
The approach is practice-oriented and consists of modules such as workshops, seminars, and public showcases. The following workshop trainers will participate: Stefan Hilterhaus (Artistic Director of PACT Zollverein), Şermin Langhoff (Artistic Director of the Maxim Gorki-Theatre), Sigrid Gareis (freelance curator) and Ong Keng Sen (Artistic Director of TheatreWorks).
The following practitioners will give seminars: Agnesia Linda Maysari, Melati Suryodarmo, Pichet Klunchun, Pawit Mahasarinan, Bilgis Hijjas, Donna Miranda, Lin Htet, Kim Ngoc and Nguyen Phuong Linh.
The participants of the Curators Academy have applied via an open call in 2017. Taking in account the local / regional context in which cultural actors move, the programme is aimed at festival makers, programmers, producers, freelance artists and other actors who already have initial curatorial experience.
The Curators Academy will be initiated for the first time in 2018 by the Goethe-Institut Singapore in partnership with TheatreWorks (Singapore). The programme for 2018 conceived & led by Ong Keng Sen, the Artistic Director of TheatreWorks (Singapore) and Founding Festival Director of Singapore International Festival of Arts (SIFA), 2014 to 2017.
