Panel Discussion with Julia Franck Ghosts of Trauma
Trauma casts a long shadow if it is not validated. Three authors meld national and social history with fragmented memory into compelling narratives. Each drew from his or her own life experiences: Julia Franck fled East Berlin and lived in a West Berlin refugee camp; Jose Luis Peixoto was born in a time of unrest at the end of the three-decade Salazar dictatorship; and Linda Christanty covered the consequences of the 30-year Aceh insurgency. They will illustrate how these incidents have permeated their writing.
