It has rarely been such a privilege to sit with other people in front of a big screen and immerse oneself in the fascinating world of cinema as it is in these event-poor pandemic times.
Even though the second Covid-19 wave in Thailand led to a slight delay, the Goethe-Institut Thailand is more than happy to finally hold its traditional Open Air Kino as a physical event.
Since the last major international film festival that took place was the Berlinale in February 2020 and most of Germany’s and Europe’s cinemas remaining closed, many of the selected German-language films are celebrating their premiere on the big screen here in Thailand with a live audience.
So over the next few weeks, you as the audience will experience the premieres of many award-winning films that have been showered with accolades, from German and European Film Awards to the Academy Awards.
This year's motto revolves around the theme of "freedom", whether political, personal or social freedom.
Furthermore, our curatorial team has paid special attention to the theme of environment, and so I would like to specifically recommend the short film "THE BEAUTY", winner of the Student Academy Awards, as well as "MANOOD CHUEA-LOKE" (“มนุษย์-เชื้อ-โลก“), one of the winning films from the "Changing Climate, Changing Lives Film Festival 2020" that took place last December in Bangkok.
We are very happy to partner with the Austrian Embassy and the Embassy of Switzerland in Bangkok jointly presenting the latest German-language films, each country represented with a feature film and a short film.
I would like to thank our partners and wish us all a wonderful time in the gardens of the Goethe-Institut Thailand. With the ongoing risk of the Covid-19 pandemic, we are taking special precautions and therefore ask you to allow a little more time for the registration process. Thank you very much, we are looking forward to welcoming you!
Maren Niemeyer,
Director Goethe-Institut Thailand
