In Germany, the branding and design of sporting goods and indeed of entire team kits plays a special role within the world of sports, and by following the changing brand narratives associated with these, we can track the evolution of graphic design through the 20th century and up to the present day.
The work carried out by Katharina Sussek and Jens Müller engages with this sports-related design and marketing. In their recent publication PUMA - The Graphic Heritage (OPTIK BOOKS, 2023), they explore this special connection between sport and design. In particular, the book traces the development of the well-known German sports company’s graphic design using photos and illustrations drawn from the company archives.
In a similar vein, the branding work carried out by Vorathit Kruavanichkit and his design consultancy Farmgroup also highlights how graphic design can be used to sharpen sports branding, one example of which is Farmgroup's work in the area of Thai boxing.
During this talk, the last event in our Everyday German Design series, graphic designers Katharina Sussek and Jens Müller will explore the unique link between sports, branding and design in a lecture that will be delivered via live video in the Goethe-Institut Library. This will be followed by a discussion with Vorathit Kruavanichkit, moderated by Santi Tonsukha, both of whom will be present in person in the library
The online lecture will be delivered in English, the subsequent discussion with Vorathit Kruavanichkit will be conducted in Thai.
