A Berlin – Ratchaburi Dialogue by Stefanie Hering and Wasinburee Supanichvoraparch
Two cultures - one common philosophy about the art of pure craftsmanship:
In March 2017, the German porcelain master Stefanie Hering from Berlin and the Thai ceramic and photography artist Wasinburee Supanichvoraparch from Ratchaburi initiated an artistic dialogue on the initiative of the Goethe-Institut Thailand.
The thematic focus of their creative exchange was the following question: How can the value of traditional craftsmanship be preserved from extinction in Thailand and Germany and how can it be translated artistically into modernity?
From the 8th to the 30th of March, the impressive results of this creative exchange will be presented in the exhibition “DIN CLAY TON” in the "Bangkok Art and Culture Centre".
Stefanie Hering produced extraordinary oversized art objects in vase form at the ceramics factory of Wasinburee Supanichvoraparch´s family in Ratchaburi, which were then translated into porcelain in one of the oldest porcelain factories in Germany, the Schwarzburger Werkstätten, by the craftsmen there - a real dialogue.
Wasinburee in turn photographed the entire creation process and and accompanied Stefanie on his return visit to Germany in her production workshops with the camera.
You can see the vases that are up to two metres in height and the photographic documentation, besides many other impressive ceramic objects and works by the temporary German-Thai artist duo, at the exhibition in BACC (Studio, 4th floor).
The basic idea of this project is to demonstrate the cultural value of traditional handicrafts and to inspire the viewers to actively support the preservation of cultural techniques that are threatened in times of industrial mass production.
