CommDe-Design Center

An interactive exhibition presented by the Goethe-Institut and the Department of Industrial Design of Chulalongkorn University (CommDe) in cooperation with the Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe.

Whether computer games are considered a political issue, an entertainment medium or even a form of art, depends on certain conditions. Games are conceived within a particular society, at a particular moment in time and consequently tell us something about their context. In this sense, every computer game can be considered political. The players are bound to the system of the game and have to follow its rules – even if they themselves give the orders and appear to act autonomously. Games may also also be regarded as political if they knowingly try to make political topics accessible for target groups which are otherwise hard to reach i. e. for political conditioning or propaganda purposes.

The interactive exhibition, Games and Politics, comprises eighteen different games, sixteen of which can be played at the exhibition venue.

The players will find themselves confronted with a wide range of political issues, e. g. precarious working conditions (SUNSET), the aftermath of armed conflict (THIS WAR OF MINE), migration and refugees (PAPERS, PLEASE!, ESCAPE FROM WOOMERA) or governmental surveillance (TOUCHSTONE).

The exhibition will be opened together with the Art Games, the Game Jam, which takes place the same weekend.
