This is a film adaptation of the novel of the same title by James Krüss. The story is set in Berlin in 1920 and tells of the young Timm Thaler who has a very special gift: an irresistible laugh. When the rich Baron Lefuet hears of Timm’s enchanting laugh, he is ruthlessly determined to possess it. With Timm’s laughter, he would be able to win the hearts of other people and manipulate them as he pleases.
Lefuet decides to make a deal with Timm: he gets Timm’s irresistible laughter and, in return, Timm wins every bet he makes for the rest of his life. Timm agrees, hoping to be able to pay off his family’s debts in this way. But very soon Timm realizes that he has lost his love of life along with his laughter. With every bet he wins, he becomes more unhappy. Finally, Timm decides to search for the evil Baron Lefuet and retrieve his laughter. (film portal)
