This is a film version of the novel of the same name by Sven Regener. In Germany in the mid 1990s. Karl "Charlie" Schmidt is discharged from a psychiatric clinic. Charlie used to work as an artist and was not averse to taking drugs until he suffered a nervous breakdown during the very night the Berlin Wall fell. Now he needs to find his way again in a completely transformed Germany. In Hamburg he runs into a few old friends who have made a name for themselves as techno musicians. They want to set out on a "Magical-Mystery-Tour" across Germany but need a driver who can stay sober for the whole trip. They convince Karl to take a break from life in supported accommodation and join them on their tour. This is the start of a crazy road trip, during which the crew attempt to unite the spirit of the hippie movement with a raver- style attitude to life.(film portal)
