Tanz Mizani For Gender Equality
CFLI National Tour Finale
Mizani was created due to our gender inequality in the dance group, which before the Mizani grant from the Canada Fund for local Initiatives, we have a ratio of 10 males dancers to 1 female dancer. To address that social issue not only affecting the performing arts in Tanzania but on so many social levels, we recruited 9 female dancers to create a gender equal cast, and created during 5 months a piece based on the dancers experiences working with gender experts and local theatre and dance coaches. The piece toured regionally to over 30 government schools and was seen by more than 12,000 school kids. This year, we received funding again from CFLI and selected 10 dancers to tour a tighter version of the piece nationally and this time also incorporate community and cultural centres throughout Tanzania.
