The democraSEE workshop is a 10-day photography encounter in Dar es Salaam to encourage new photography stories and discussions on issues relating to how we understand our changing world and the changes within photography.
Presented by Photo: and the Goethe-Institut Tanzania, this workshop brings together 10 practicing photographers who are concerned with issues that have an impact on our human and social rights and how photography practice can build response to this. The workshop will be facilitated by John Fleetwood (South Africa) with Nicholas Calvin (Tanzania).
Participants who are interested in sharing, developing, and improving their existing or new photography stories are encouraged to apply. The workshop will seek to develop visual languages and content that opens conversations about issues of representation, positionality, and visibilities. The workshop will also look at ways in how photography can engage with public.
The democraSEE workshop in Dar es Salaam is part of a series of workshops across the African continent, to consider social, political and identity concerns through photography. These workshops stem from the democraSEE award and mentorship platform initiated by Photo: (www.phototool.co.za) (Johannesburg, South Africa) in partnership with the Goethe-Institut South Africa.
Strict Covid-19 protocol will be followed, including the use of mandatory face masks, adherence to social distancing and hand-sanitizing.

Venue: Nafasi Art Space, Eyasi Road, Mikocheni B, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania
The workshop is for free.

Criteria for application
Any photographer, artist or practitioner working with photography based in Tanzania may apply. The cost of travel, accommodation, and food for the duration of the workshop is for the participant's own account.
democraSEE is a platform for diversity. Applicants of all gender identities, sexualities and backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
Photographers must have access to a digital camera and computer during the workshop.
In preparation, applicants must submit:
- The application form on the website
- CV or Resume not more than 3 pages
- Copy of an ID or passport document
- 1 or 2 photography bodies of work, maximum of 20 images, (suggest 10 images per project) in .jpg format, 72 dpi (length of longer side max 20 cm), relevant to the description of the project.
- A written description of each body of photography work; the text for each description should not exceed 300 words.
Selected applicants will be informed by the organizers in the third week of June 2021.
