This year's annual translation award ceremony in honor of the Helen & Kurt Wolff Translator's Prize and the Gutekunst Prize of the Friends of Goethe New York will be streamed live on Zoom from the Goethe-Institut New York and Goethe-Institut London. We can accomodate a small audience for the ceremony 'in person' at the Goethe-Institut New York: to attend, RSVP to library-newyork@goethe.de is mandatory and proof of vaccination is requested.

Established in 1996 and funded by the German government, the Helen & Kurt Wolff Translator's Prize is awarded each year to honor an outstanding literary translation from German into English published in the USA the previous year. The prizewinning translator receives $10,000. This year, the Prize celebrates its 25th anniversary and we are honored to be joined by guest speaker Alexander Wolff, grandson of Kurt Wolff. Jackie Smith has been chosen to receive the 2021 Helen & Kurt Wolff Translator's Prize by a jury of five for her translation of Judith Schalansky's novel An Inventory of Losses, published by New Directions Publishing in 2020.
 
In 2010, the Goethe-Institut New York received a generous donation in memory of Frederick and Grace Gutekunst. A prize was created to identify outstanding young translators of German literature into English and assist them in establishing contact with the translation and publishing communities. The prize has been supported by the Friends of Goethe New York since 2017. For her translation of an excerpt from Elsa Koester’s Couscous mit Zimt (Frankfurter Verlagsanstalt, 2020), the winner of the 2021 Gutekunst Prize of the Friends of Goethe New York is Jennifer Jenson.
