The Goethe-Institut New York and Gagosian are pleased to announce an evening of conversation with leading artists
Katharina Grosse and
David Reed, and art historian and curator
Katy Siegel, coinciding with the openings of exhibitions at Gagosian’s 980 Madison Avenue and 555 West 24th Street locations on January 17 and 19, respectively.
Painting Paintings (David Reed) 1975, curated by Siegel with Christopher Wool, revisits early brushmark paintings by Reed in the context of the times. At 24th Street Grosse will present her first-ever New York gallery exhibition of new paintings and sculpture.
For many years, Grosse and Reed have maintained a private dialogue about the practice and discourse of painting; for the first time, they will make this dialogue public, with added insight from Siegel’s critical perspective.
Katharina Grosse was born in 1961 in Freiburg/Breisgau, Germany and currently lives and works in Berlin. Recent solo institutional exhibitions include

Untitled Trumpet, 2015 for the 56th Biennale di Venezia (2015) and the Aquatics Center for MoMA PS1’s
Rockaway! program (2016).
David Reed was born in 1946 in San Diego, California and currently lives and works in New York. Recent solo institutional exhibitions include

Painting Paintings (David Reed) 1975 will be on view at Gagosian in New York until February 25.
Katy Siegel is the Thaw Endowed Chair at Stony Brook University, and Senior Curator at the Baltimore Museum of Art. Exhibitions include
High Times, Hard Times: New York Painting, 1967-75; and
Postwar: Art Between the Pacific and the Atlantic, 1945-1965, which she co-curated with Okwui Enwezor and Ulrich Wilmes, currently on view at Haus der Kunst, Munich. She is the co-curator of Mark Bradford’s installation for the American Pavilion at the upcoming 57th Biennale di Venezia. Siegel is the author of
Since ’45: America and the Making of Contemporary Art (Reaktion Books, 2016).
