The video essay All und Alltag is a very personal look at DEFA’s feature films. The filmmaker Betina Kuntzsch, known for her animated short films, grew up in the GDR. She takes the audience along as she immerses herself in the film world that shaped her and many others. Which films are particularly memorable? Which are worth rediscovering? The essay takes up a wide variety of films – from children’s films that dream of the universe to cult films that everyone saw. Works that reflect the mood in the final months of East Germany are also part of the cinematic “short biography of DEFA.” Her journey through the history of the film company gives viewers an diverting impression of the heterogeneous filmmaking of DEFA as well as its social and film-historical significance.
