The Big Pond #30: Milwaukee’s German Heritage

Milwaukee has been called the most German city in America – already in the 1840s, large numbers of Germans who were fleeing wars in Europe began settling in the city. In this episode of The Big Pond, our producer Carole Zimmer explores the experience of these first-generation German immigrants and looks at how the city has changed for younger generations and the way that they relate to German culture.

Even though Milwaukee is still known for its beer breweries, brewing traditions that began with German immigrants in the 19th century, there has only ever been one year when beer was Milwaukee’s most important product: 1890. Ever since then, the most important products have been related to durable goods, especially metal bending – everything from farm tractors to Harley Davidsons to mining equipment.

But German heritage is also present in many other ways: there is a strong German Lutheran community, a German zither society, and the Milwaukee Film Festival where German cinema is featured prominently. Accompany our producer Carole Zimmer as she finds out more.
