The Big Pond #04: The Colossi of Buffalo

Buffalo, New York, was at one time the world’s foremost grain port. More than a dozen enormous grain silos still attest to that fact – awesome colossi made of wood, steel, and reinforced concrete. Their surreal quality also fascinated European pioneers of modern architecture, including Walter Gropius, Le Corbusier, and Mies van der Rohe.

This episode of The Big Pond is dedicated to a city of true grit – to its roughness, stamina, and beauty. Buffalo, New York, was at one time the world’s foremost grain port, a truly grand and multi-ethnic “Rust Belt” industrial city (with no fewer than eight mayors of German background). From the mid-1800s through the early 20th century, crucial to Buffalo’s economy was its waterfront on Lake Erie.

There stood an architectural phenomenon: More than a dozen enormous grain silos – colossi that stored vast quantities of wheat, rye, and oats being shipped from the Midwest to the eastern United States and abroad. The appearance of these awesome, surreal wood, steel, and reinforced concrete structures fascinated European pioneers of modern architecture, including Walter Gropius, Le Corbusier, and Mies van der Rohe. The grain silos became a symbol of modernity – and, later, of urban decline.

Fortunately, after decades in the dumps, Buffalo has sprung back to life, with young people returning to the city to take advantage of job opportunities and reasonably priced real estate. And in recent years the Buffalo grain silos, too, have been rediscovered and re-purposed – a trend followed in similar former industrial areas in Europe, South America and South Africa.
