Three women, two countries, one shared experience: Motherhood. From giving birth to receiving support – our producer Melissa Gerr looks at the role and expectations of being a mother in the US and in Germany, revealing some startling differences.

We meet three mothers who share their experiences on both sides of the Atlantic: Luise, who is originally from Germany, is married to a US-American and has been raising her kids Arthur (3 months) and Rosa (3), in the US; Kate, who grew up in Minnesota but has been living in Germany for the past 25 years with her husband Axel and their sons Oliver (18), Bennet (16) and Christopher (9); and Sibylle, who was born in Germany and now lives in its capital Berlin with her US-American husband and their four children.

We learn a lot about the realities of raising kids in both Germany and the US, each with its own pluses and minuses – and this episode of The Big Pond shows that every individual person will have an individual experience that doesn’t neatly fit into a pre-established narrative. This is by no means an exhaustive research, but our interviewee’s honest comments provide a window into the diverse (and sometimes humorous) realities of being a mom. Listen to find out more.
