The Bonn Capitals present their Medals

“German baseball” may sound like an oxymoron, but the Bonn Capitals have successfully maintained a leading position in the German baseball league for years. The Capitals’ success can be traced back to earlier times when Bonn was the capital of Germany and home to a large American community that popularized the sport.

Baseball and cheerleading in Germany are gaining in popularity. But both of these classic US sports still lead a niche existence. Even Bundesliga and national players have to resign themselves to being amateurs. They all receive nearly no support and are studying or have a full-time day job. For the clubs, it is difficult to find sponsors.

Nevertheless, the athletes go the extra mile–they follow their American ideals. A lot of German baseball players and cheerleaders have been to the States and have seen their heroes compete live. So they return to Germany with newfound enthusiasm.

For this episode of The Big Pond, our producer Susanne Grüter visits the Bonn Capitals and the Wildcats, a cheerleading team in Leverkusen, both amongst the best American-style sports clubs in Germany. A few months ago, the Caps won their first championship in their 29 years of existence and the Wildcats have brought home several titles and many, many medals. Even the peewees, the Tapsy Cats, finished second.
