Since the US Men’s National Soccer Team failed to qualify for the 2018 World Cup, many American soccer players have been looking to sign onto international teams to better their skills and become more competitive. Players like Christian Pulisic, who got his start on the German team Borussia Dortmund, show promise for the future of soccer in the US.

In the past few years, Germany’s main contribution to US soccer has been more through importing players rather than exporting them. A slew of American stars – like Christian Pulisic, Tyler Adams, Haji Wright and Weston McKinny – have been developing their game in the Bundesliga, Germany’s professional soccer league. This is part of a larger trend of American soccer growing more competitive through exposure to international soccer. So despite the big disappointment with the 2018 World Cup, there actually might be a bright future for the sport in the US.

Our producer Rob Sachs learns about the current state of affairs by talking to soccer expert Mike Woitalla, Executive Editor of the magazine Soccer America, to Phillip Gyau, a former member of the US Men’s National Soccer Team and to Steve Klein, Director of Coaching at the US Soccer Development Academy. And Rob also reveals the surprising new trend that swapping athletic talent goes both ways: German players that show great potential in football are also transferred to the US.
