The European Book Club (organized by the Goethe-Institut Chicago and EUNIC Chicago) meets regularly for a book discussion of a bestselling novel in English translation. Guests who would like to attend, should read the book in advance and come prepared to participate in the discussion.

Andreas has lived his entire life in the Austrian Alps, where he arrived as a young boy taken in by a farming family. He is a man of very few words and so, when he falls in love with Marie, he doesn't ask for her hand in marriage, but instead some friends illuminate her name at dusk across the mountain. When Marie, pregnant with their first child, dies in an avalanche Andreas' heart is broken. He leaves his valley just once more, to fight in WWII - where he is taken prisoner in the Caucasus - and returns to find that modernity has reached his remote haven. . .

Robert Seethaler worked for many years in TV and feature films. He is a distinguished author and screen writer. His novels Der Trafikant (2012) and Ein ganzes Leben (2014) were major success with the public. He lives in Vienna and Berlin.

Born in Germany, Jana-Maria Hartmann studied Comparative Literature at Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich and the Sorbonne in Paris and is a graduate of the Columbia Publishing Course. After internships at Verlagsgruppe Random House in Munich and Bettina Schrewe’s scouting agency in New York, she moved to the German capital to work as an editor for BerlinVerlag for more than six years. In 2015, she moved to Chicago to launch her own literary scouting agency, JMH Scouting.
