Poster Exhibition

Chophouse Row Courtyard and Goethe Pop Up

During the Capitol Hill Art Walk in June, Goethe Pop Up Seattle is opening a new show onsite. Developed by the Goethe-Institut and Monument Lab, the Shaping the Past poster exhibition will be installed in and around the Pop Up itself as well as additional indoor and outdoor spaces in the Chophouse Row.

Shaping the Past builds connections and showcases patterns that constitute a transnational memory culture at work to address systemic racism and sexism, social and economic exclusion, and legacies of colonial and state violence. Featuring works by artists, activists, and collectives from North America and Germany—all part of the Monument Lab Fellows Program—this exhibition broadens understandings and illuminates ongoing memory interventions that reimagine civil society. The spotlighted projects offer innovative and reparative models through creative changemakers who are actively shaping the past and our paths forward.

Goethe Pop Up Seattle presents this poster exhibition as part of an ongoing commitment to memory work as embodied in Shaping the Past.

In November 2020, in collaboration with STP fellow Free Egunfemi Bangura and the Goethe Pop Up, Central District Black arts organization Wa Na Wari inaugurated Story Porch. Summer 2021 will see the premiere of Train-Hopping. A pilot program produced in partnership with the Seattle Office of Arts & Culture and ARTS at King Street Station, Train-Hopping features in-depth dialogue between STP fellow Arielle Julia Brown from Philadelphia and nationally recognized Seattle-based memory worker Delbert Richardson. Posters highlighting the practices of Arielle Julia Brown and Free Bangura are highlighted in Goethe Pop Up Seattle’s installation.

Posters in the Chophouse Row Courtyard and in public areas of the 11th Avenue building are open to the public at all times. The exhibition continues into and around the Pop Up itself, which will be open by appointment for the Capitol Hill Art Walk June 10 as well as select dates throughout the following month.
