Even thirty years after his death, Joseph Beuys, known worldwide as the man with the hat, the felt and the “Fettecke” is remembered as a visionary, who was, and still is, ahead of his time.  Despite being the first German artist to have a solo exhibition at the Guggenheim Museum in New York, Beuys’ work was often derided in Germany as the 'most expensive trash of all time'.

Comprised of previously unpublished phot/audio/video material, Veiel’s film creates an intimate portrait of Beuys, which, much like the artist himself, opens up spaces for ideas and discussion. Beuys speaks for himself; recounting his personal legend, capturing him as he boxes, chats, lectures, explains art to a dead hare, and poses the question: 'Do you want to instigate a revolution without laughter?'

Veiel’s film also presents Beuys as the family man, teacher and the Green Party candidate, and makes visible the contradictions and tensions which gave rise to Beuys' “Gesamtkunstwerk,” reminding us that Beuys' expanded concept of art feeds directly into today's social, political and moral debates.
