Theodor Storm: Immensee
At the November 2017 meeting the German Book Club will read and discuss "Immensee" by Theodor Storm.
Theodor Storm's most successful novella "Immensee", published in 1849 and published in 1850 in a revised version, reached thirty editions during his lifetime.
In the narrative frame, Reinhard Werner, now an old man, recalls his youthful love to Elisabeth, in episodes from childhood, youth and the early manhood of the protagonist.
It's a story of a thwarted love, a heart-rending lifelong misunderstanding love, all of its passions evoked rather than explained, all of its psychology implicit, revealed by actions rather than declarations.
Theodor Storm (1817-88) was a German poet and writer whose novellas are amongst the finest in German literature. Characterised by a haunting nostalgia, Storm's work is a high point of the German Romantic movement.
