In the face of micro-aggressions (and worse) from his German work colleagues, Xhafer (Mišel Matičević – Babylon Berlin, Dogs of Berlin), a prickly Kosovo-born pharmaceutical engineer becomes increasingly paranoid.  When Xhafer finds a dead rat hanging from the gate in front of his home that he shares with his German wife (Sandra Hüller – Toni Erdmann, Sleep) and thier children, it is immediately clear to him that his racist colleagues could be behind it. Every occurrence, every word, every gesture is taken as evidence. As Xhafer’s uneasiness grows every day, he plunges deeper into crisis. In his second feature-length film, director Visar Morina dissects the psychological effects of social exclusion and presents them as interplay between belonging and alienation. Combining subtle images that gradually shift according to his protagonist’s state of mind with meticulous performances from his extraordinary cast, Morina shows how personality can shape the experience of immigration, and how quickly cracks can develop in even the most stable of identities. Variety calls it “a nervily comic, impressively poised psychodrama.”

Visar Morina:  Visar Morina was born in Kosovo and studied at the Cologne Academy of Media Arts. His much-acclaimed debut Babai received multiple awards such as Best Director and European Cinema Label in Karlovy Vary and Best Script at Filmfest München. Exil is his second feature. The script was honored with the German Federal Award Lola in Gold for an unfilmed screenplay.
