As part of the 14th Annual German Currents Film Festival, we convene a Women Filmmakers Panel with Maryam Zaree (BORN IN EVIN), Marika Minoguchi (RELATIVITY) and Daphne Charizani (SISTERS APART). They will have a conversation with US filmmaker Erika Cohn (BELLY OF THE BEAST) and HFPA Vice President Helen Hoehne.
Presented in partnership with Women in Film, Film Fatales, and Women in Film and Television Germany. 

Topics include: The differences between the US and European film industries and markets. What are some of the major challenges in getting your film made? Choosing your film - the daunting task of selecting who’s story to tell. Filmmaking in the time of COVID-19.

Maryam Zaree was born in 1983 in Teheran/Iran. Fleeing political persecution, her mother brought Maryam with her to Germany when she was two. She grew up in Frankfurt am Main and studied acting in the renowned film school Konrad-Wolf in Potsdam Babelsberg. She has played lead roles in a dozen feature films, worked for theatre and Television and has been awarded for her performances. In 2018 she received a “Grimme Preis” for her performance in the TV show “4 Blocks.” Her first theatre play “Kluge Gefühle” received the Author’s Prize of the Heidelberg Stückemarkt and has been performed in multiple theaters. Born in Evin is her debut feature film.

Mariko Minoguchi was born in Munich in in 1988. After graduation, she completed internships and assistantships in the areas of production, directing, cinematography, and production design on more than ten film and television productions. In 2007, she directed the short film MAYBE, which won the German Youth Film Award and followed this in 2010 with the short films LIEBEN ALLEIN and GESCHWISTERHERZEN. In 2011, she founded the production company TRIMAPHILM (now TRIMAFILM), producing the short films WIE DU KÜSST and I REMEMBER. Her short film KARLSTOD (2012) was screened at more than 30 national and international festivals and received various awards. In collaboration with director Tim Fehlbaum (HELL), Minoguchi wrote the screenplay for the international co-production HAVEN: ABOVE SKY. RELATIVITY is her feature-length debut as a director.

Daphne Charizani was born in Thessaloniki, Greece and attended school in Greece and Germany. She studied Stage Design in Paris, and later Politics in Munich and Hamburg. Her documentary "Make up" screened at the Berlinale in 1999 in the Forum/Deutsche Reihe and won the Hessian Screenplay Award. Her feature "Madrid" was nominated for the Screenplay Award at the 2003 Munich International Film festival as part of the "New German Cinema" series. In 2004, "Madrid" received the Hessian Film Award for Best Feature. Wrote the scripts for "The Audition" and "The Architect" together with Ina Weisse, for which they received the 2009 Saarbrücken Film Festival Script Award.

Erika Cohn is a Peabody and Emmy Award-winning filmmaker who Variety recognized as one of 2017's top Documentary Filmmakers. Most recently, Erika directed/produced Belly of the Beast, a NY Times Critic's Pick, currently playing in virtual cinemas. Erika also directed/produced The Judge (TIFF 2017) and co-directed/produced In Football We Trust (Sundance 2015).

Helen Hoehne is the Vice-President of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), the organization in charge of voting for the Golden Globe Awards. Helen was born in Hamburg, Germany, and relocated to Los Angeles in 1994 where she earned a Master‘s Degree in Psychology from Pepperdine University. As an entertainment journalist for almost 20 years now, Helen has written for various publications in Germany including TV Movie, one of Germany’s largest biweekly television and movie magazines through the Bauer Media Group. She is also a regular contributor for German television channels: RTL and ProSieben.




The German Currents Film Festival 2020 is a co-production of the Goethe-Institut Los Angeles and the American Cinematheque, and is presented in kind cooperation with the German Consulate General, and with the support of The Friends of Goethe, The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, German Films, and media partners Deutsche Welle.
