Germany and the United States are confronting a similar challenge: In both countries, anti-establishment candidates are winning more votes. At the same time, both countries face stagnant wages, a disappearing middle class, and a resurgence of grassroots populism on both sides of the political spectrum. What is the future of our democracies? What does voting behavior tell us about the direction in which our countries are heading?
 
This lunch discussion features two outstanding experts: Christina Tillmann, Director of the “Future of Democracy” project at the Bertelsmann Stiftung in Gütersloh, Germany and Neera Tanden, President and CEO of the Center for American Progress. The event is organized by the Bertelsmann Foundation and the Goethe-Institut and will be moderated by Irene Braam, Executive Director at the Bertelsmann Foundation in Washington, DC.
