Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden

As part of the interactive audio art installation Sound Scene: Mapping Memory, organized by the DC Listening Lounge and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Berlin-based sound artist Sam Auinger will lead the workshop “Perform the Building.

In this workshop, Auinger will guide workshop participants in an architectural listening exploration to practice thinking with your ears, noting the link between sound and memory. Together you'll examine all the audible acoustic effects and different auditory qualities in and around the Hirshhorn building. By reflecting on the process you can create a listening site map of the Smithsonian Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden.

*Each Perform the Building workshop will be capped at 25 people. Participation will be on a first come, first served basis.

Now in its 11th year, Sound Scene will feature sonic surprises and thought provoking listening opportunities produced by DC-based artists as well as works from artists from Spain, India, Armenia, Germany, New York, Michigan, and elsewhere. There will also be live performances from Layne Garrett, David Schulman, members of the National Symphony Orchestra, and the dance ensemble, Errant Movement. A full schedule of live performances is available online and on location.

The workshop "Perform the Building" is part of Sound Scene: Mapping Memory, an interactive audio art installation, July 7 and 8, 2018. Produced by the DC Listening Lounge and the Smithsonian Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden with support from the Goethe-Institut Washington and the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities.
