The Pine Islands (Die Kieferninseln) by Marion Poschmann (2017, translated by Jen Calleja in 2019)

Stepping out of the daily routine - that’s exactly what Gilbert Silvester does one day: drives to the airport and takes the first flight he can book. Once abroad, through pure coincidence, he meets a travel partner under interesting circumstances who becomes his guide in the tradition of the road novel. Inspired by poetry, Gilbert travels around the country to contemplate life, his past, and the relationship with his wife through the landscape.
