Goethe Book Club: Robert Menasse's The Capital (2017/2019)

Read and discuss works by contemporary German authors in this series hosted by the Goethe-Institut. All books can be read in recent English translation or in the German original; our discussion will be in English. Led by local German professor Amanda Sheffer (The Catholic University of America), this book club focuses on contemporary fiction and will explore experiences and thoughts about the text.

The Capital (Die Hauptstadt) by Robert Menasse (2017, translated by Jamie Bulloch in 2019)

Winner of the 2018 German Book Prize, The Capital examines the center of the European Union: Brussels. The story questions what might unite Europe through a shared common history to mark the “Big Jubilee Project” in the cultural ministry. As a pig runs wild in the streets, the novel examines the dangers of a fragmented Europe.

Robert Menasse is an Austrian author who studied German, Philosophy, and Political Science. He has won many awards including the German Book Prize and European Book Prize. He resides in Vienna, Lower Austria, and Brussels.
