Design for Everyone: An Intro to Bauhaus

Join us for the first installment of Design For Everyone, a lecture series that seeks to open up conversations about design to broader, more diverse audiences.

Last year was the 100th anniversary of Bauhaus and we’re taking it back to the basics for those who might have wondered “What is Bauhaus?” or for those who need a refresher.

Moderated by Ellen Lupton, Curator of Contemporary Design at Cooper-Hewitt, with panelists Anthony Harris of Gensler, Justin Donnelly of Jumbo, Michelle Jackson-Beckett of R&Company, and Mina Marefat of Georgetown University.

Ellen Lupton is Senior Curator of Contemporary Design at Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum in New York City. Her exhibitions include How Posters Work, Beautiful Users, and The Senses: Design Beyond Vision. Lupton also serves as director of the Graphic Design MFA Program at MICA in Baltimore, where she has authored numerous books on design processes, including Thinking with Type, Graphic Design Thinking, and Graphic Design: The New Basics. Her recent books Design Is Storytelling and Health Design Thinking were published by Cooper Hewitt. She is an AIGA Gold Medalist and a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences.

Justin Donnelly is an award-winning architect and furniture designer, located in Brooklyn, New York. Justin is creative director at Jumbo, which he co-founded with Monling Lee in 2017. Justin received a Bachelor of Arts from Stanford University, studied at Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation (GSAPP), and completed a Master’s of Architecture at the University of Maryland. His independent design work has been shown at Nomad Circle Venice, Stockholm Furniture Fair, SightUnseen, ICFF, and WantedDesign. In 2016, Justin was selected as an Emerging Talent Honoree at the NYCxDESIGN Awards. His designs have been featured in the New York Times, T-Magazine, Surface, Wallpaper*, Metropolis, Architectural Digest, Interior Design, DAMn, and many others. His reseach and writing has been published in Disegno Magazine.

Mina Marefat is a registered architect, urban designer, and an architectural historian practicing in Washington. She conducts and publishes original research on modern architecture and urbanism. She holds a PhD from MIT, a Masters in Architecture and Urban design from Harvard University and an Urban Planning degree from Tehran University. She has been a Fulbright fellow in Paris, an NEH fellow and a Rockefeller Scholar at the John W. Kluge Center for Scholarly Studies at the Library of Congress where she initiated the Cities Project to address new research and conferences on lesser known but important cities around the world. She has published extensively including original research on the work of Frank Lloyd Wright, Le Corbusier, Walter Gropius and Alvar Aalto. She served as the curatorial advisor to the Guggenheim Museum’s 2009-2010 Frank Lloyd Wright retrospective in New York and Bilbao. Currently she is curator of a new traveling exhibition: Eero Sarinen: A Reputation for Innovation. As principal of Design Research, an architectural/urban design and research/education firm she has consulted on urban revitalization, cultural projects and green design. She has worked on urban parks, public spaces and streetscapes, integrating cultural heritage with redevelopment for the cities of Washington, Newark, Bam, Tehran, Isfahan and Paris as well as on architectural and urban design projects. Seeking to advance architectural education, Marefat initiates, plans and implements exhibitions, international exchanges, professional programs, conferences and workshops for global clients. She has collaborated with the Finnish Embassy, National Academy of Sciences, World Learning, the Library of Congress, National Museum of American History, the National Building Museum, Corcoran Gallery of Art, Dumbarton Oaks, Harvard University and MIT.
