From October 2018 until the end of 2019, Germany and its deep ties to the U.S. will be on display all across the United States. The campaign Wunderbar Together (“Deutschlandjahr USA”/The Year of German-American Friendship) will travel across the entire U.S., bringing with it a collection of events and exhibits revolving around business and industry, politics, education, culture, and science, to highlight the unique importance of transatlantic relations.
Oktoberfest in your own neighborhood! Three mobile beer gardens toured the States for a year, celebrating Bavarian beer, pretzels, and transatlantic friendship.
Celebrating German Film
For one year, we celebrated German film by offering a collection of 48 streamable German movies for free in the US – including a wide range of genres and time periods, a colorful portrait of German film.
Cars, televisions, computers – German inventions have changed the world we live in. The “Land of Inventors Germany” exhibition is traveling across the US, showcasing inventions that have improved our daily lives – and continue to do so. Admission is free.
The Goethe-Institut ran four Pop Ups in Houston, Kansas City, Minneapolis, and Seattle during the “Year of German-American Friendship”. Examples of Goethe-Institut's projects and work were demonstrated at these locations. The purpose of these Pop Ups was to unite cultural forces and local civil society and organize events. In 2020, the three Pop Ups in Houston, Kansas City, and Seattle will remain active and continue to offer exciting cultural programming.
Wunderbar Together: The Year of German-American Friendship 2018/19 (“Deutschlandjahr USA”) is an initiative funded by the German Federal Foreign Office, implemented by the Goethe-Institut, and supported by the Federation of German Industries (BDI) with the goal of presenting today’s Germany to people across the entire U.S.
Wunderbar Together will showcase how closely the two countries are linked by heritage, common values, and shared interests, illustrating how a brighter future is possible if we tackle global challenges together through focusing on dialogue, exchange, and cooperation between people.
The campaign aims to convey a multifaceted, modern image of Germany in the U.S. All areas relevant to society – from business and industry, politics, education, culture, science, civil society, to sports – will be explored. Significant visibility will be achieved by consolidating activities and stakeholders, as well as through public, high-profile formats and targeted media efforts.
Germany and the U.S. are connected through a centuries-long common history. German immigrants have helped shape the development of the United States, while the successful development of post-war Germany is inextricably linked to US engagement. Wunderbar together, the Deutschlandjahr USA 2018/19, builds on this success story and aims to intensify the transatlantic dialogue.
