Workshop for teachers of German about Berlin in literature, art, music, film and architecture

Berlin has not only been a visitor-magnet for people from all over the world, it has also profoundly shaped the perception of Germany abroad. Berlin is a stage, a backdrop, a protagonist and the thematic focus of countless works of art and literature, of songs and films. It is through these media that most of our students first learn about the German capital before ever setting a foot in it.

The Program of German and Scandinavian Studies at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, the Goethe-Institute of Boston and AATG Massachussetts invite teachers of German from New England to participate in the seminar ‘Berlin, Berlin’ from May 4, 5:00 pm to May 5, 5:00 pm in Amherst, MA. The workshop will offer presentations on Berlin in German art, literature, music, film, and architecture, introduce a variety of materials and offer suggestions for activities in Berlin, while also providing an opportunity for exchange and for collaboratively developing materials for the German classroom. The language of presentation will be German.

Attendance of the seminar is free. In addition, the Goethe-Institut Boston offers sixteen scholarships for lodging which will be distributed in the order of registration. There is one free hotel room per participating school/college. Twelve rooms will be distributed amongst German teachers of middle or high schools. Four rooms will be available for participants from Higher Education facilities.

Registration for the seminar is closed. For questions, please contact Kerstin Hämmerling, Kerstin.Haemmerling@goethe.de.
