Films for all ages

Biomaterialien - Patentlösungen der Natur © Max-Planck-Institut Nature‘s Patented Solutions (Biomaterialien – Patentlösung aus der Natur)
Director, Executive Producer, & Writer: Anna Massih, Massih Media Color, 9 minutes, Germany 2014, English with Voice Over
During the course of evolution, many biomaterials with fascinating skills developed. Peter Fratzl strives to understand their structure in detail applying them to new technologies.

Klimamodelle - Wärmepumpe Ozean © Max-Planck-Institut A Heat Pump in the Ocean (Klimamodelle – Wärmepumpe Ozean)
Director, Executive Producer, & Writer: Anna Massih, Massih Media, Color, 10 minutes, Germany 2012, English with Voice Over
How can we better prepare for tropical storms and drought? Jochem Marotzke researches the fluctuation of Atlantic Ocean currents which are responsible for climate change. He predicts them precisely many years in advance.

Die Sonne - Feuerwerk Sonne © Max-Planck-Institut Stormy Sun (Die Sonne – Feuerwerk der Sonne)
Director, Executive Producer, & Writer: Anna Massih, Massih Media, Color, 10 minutes, Germany 2012, English with Voice Over
Eruptions in the sun do not only produce aurora borealis but can also damage satellites and destroy power supply systems. The astrophysicist Same Solanki attached a telescope to a huge helium balloon to research the activities of the sun.

Klima - Der Atmen der Erde © Max-Planck-Institut Climate – How the Earth Breathes (Klima – Der Atem der Erde)
Director, Executive Producer, & Writer: Anna Massih, Massih Media, Color, 9 minutes, Germany 2015, English with Voice Over
Researchers today understand the earth’s climate system very well. But until recently one very important part could only be estimated: Which role does vegetation and soil play in climate? Markus Reichstein was able to quantify this key question.

Zellorganellen - Gene auf Wanderschaft © Max-Planck-Institut Cloroplasts – Genes on the Move (Zellorganellen – Gene auf Wanderschaft)
Director, Executive Producer, & Writer: Anna Massih, Massih Media Color, 8 minutes, Germany 2013, English with Voice Over
Genotype is not only found in the nucleus of every cell but also in chloroplasts and mitochondria. Genes move from both organelles into the cell nucleus. Ralph Bock researches how genes work their way into the nucleus and he re-enacts processes of evolution in his laboratory.

Wolken - Mehr Schatten im Treibhaus © Max-Planck-Institut Clouds – More Shade in the Greenhouse? (Wolken – Mehr Schatten im Treibhaus?)
Director, Executive Producer, & Writer: Anna Massih, Massih Media Color, 11 minutes, Germany 2014 English with Voice Over
Clouds play an important role in climate processes. But still many questions are unanswered: Do higher temperatures lead to more clouds? Is this stopping climate change? Are there unknown components? Bjorn Stevens and his team are researching on those questions.

Blühende Pflanzen - das richtige Timing © Max-Planck-Institut Flowering Plants – The Right Timing
Director, Executive Producer, & Writer: Anna Massih Massih Media Color, 11 minutes, Germany 2013 English with Voice Over
How does a plant know when it should flower to produce fruits and seeds at the correct time? George Coupland wants to know how plants measure the length of a day. By understanding those mechanisms, he says, we might be able to alter agriculture.

Tuning für die Brennstoffzellen © Max-Planck-Institut Tuning for Fuel Cells
Director, Executive Producer, & Writer: Anna Massih, Massih Media Color, 10 minutes, Germany 2013, English with Voice Over
Our appetite for energy is vast – and constantly growing. But the sources of fuel are limited and we need new sources of energy. Experimenting to increase the efficiency of fuel cells, researchers at the Max-Planck-Institut are hoping that they might be a new resource.

Anna Massih © Anna Massih Anna Massih is a molecular biologist, journalist, and TV producer of science films, born in Berlin, lives and works in Munich. From the very beginning of her studies, it has always been her desire to communicate her fascination for science to others. Since 1995, she has been working as director and producer for a number of science editorial offices of various TV stations. She has also developed new TV formats and is a lecturer at the medienakademie Munich. Since 2009, she is producing films for schools and universities for the Max-Planck-Gesellschaft.

Special thanks go to Andreas Klempin, Goethe-Institut Bangkok and Klara Räthel, without whose work this series would not have been possible.

The film program is a cooperation with the Science Film Festival, an initiative by the Goethe-Institut in Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Africa that reaches over 750,000 visitors in 16 countries annually.

The film is part of our series TAKE THE GREEN LINE, inspired by solarise: a sea of all colors is Luftwerk’s site-specific response to the Garfield Park Conservatory’s historic structure and natural collection.
