Translations: Seattle Transgender Film Festival 2021

Goethe Pop Up Seattle is excited to partner with Three Dollar Bill Cinema to co-present Monika Treut’s newest film Genderation at the 16th Translations Seattle Transgender Film Festival from May 6-9, 2021.

German filmmaker Monika Treut revisits the protagonists of her 1999 documentary Gendernauts, one of the first documentaries about the transgender movement in San Francisco.

Translations Seattle Transgender Film Festival is a groundbreaking film festival that provides the Pacific Northwest with a venue for films by, for, and about transgender, non-binary, and gender-diverse people and the issues facing the community. Launched in 2006, it is one of only a few transgender film festivals in the world, placing emphasis on visibility and positive representation. This year, the festival program is fully online so you can enjoy it from the safety of your home.

The film will be accompanied by a pre-recorded discussion, Representing Trans Histories, with Susan Stryker (Genderation), Scott Turner Schofield (No Ordinary Man), and Niko Storment (Trans March: A Look Back at Transgender History), and moderated by the festival’s own Cooper Sealy.

The film stream is available to viewers in the U.S. from May 6-9.

About the Film:
Monika Treut | Germany | 2021 | 88 min.

In 1999, Monika Treut’s Gendernauts was one of the first documentaries about the transgender movement in San Francisco. Twenty years later, the director seeks out the pioneers of that time. How have their lives evolved? How have aging and a shifting landscape affected them?

The documentary Genderation, which premiered at this year’s Berlinale International Film Festival, traces the lives of some of the original film’s central participants, who have been forced out of San Francisco by unrelenting economic pressures and aggressive gentrification, and who watch as hard-won rights have come under massive political attack.
