German House Seattle

Goethe Pop Up Seattle, together with the Honorary Consulate of Germany in Seattle, welcomes Boogie Woogie pianist Frank Muschalle for a solo performance at the historic German House on Seattle’s First Hill.

Join us for an unforgettable evening of swinging blues and Boogie Woogie, rolling basses, trickling treble, and pulsating rhythms.

Believed to have been developed in African-American communities of East Texas lumber and turpentine camps in the 1870s, Boogie Woogie became a popular music genre during the late 1920s. The emergence of the steam locomotive, both in terms of its sound and rhythm, and the vast migrations of the period are thought to have been major influences. In its early stages, this style of music was often referred to as “fast western” or “fast blues” as differentiated from the “slow blues” of New Orleans and St. Louis. Later, swing bands incorporated the Boogie Woogie beats into some of their music. Today, it is mainly associated with dancing.

Frank Muschalle © Stephan Spaderna Berlin-based musician Frank Muschalle has been on tour for 30 years and is considered to be one of the most sought-after Blues & Boogie Woogie pianists. He has played concerts all over Europe, Paraguay, Bolivia, the United States, and North Africa.

He has released 14 CDs so far with various musicians, including Carey Bell, Jean-Pierre Bertrand, Nappy Brown, Jimmy Coe, Herb Hardesty, Red Holloway, Stephan Holstein, Bob Margolin, Jimmy McCracklin, Louisiana Red, Alex Schultz, Matthias Seuffert, Cary Smith, Bob Stroger, Hubert Sumlin, Engelbert Wrobel, and Rusty Zinn.

A far cry from mere virtuoso pyrotechnics, Muschalle demonstrates how to remain within the idiom and still tell little stories with motifs and riffs, instead of simply juggling with them…
