Francis (Welket Bungué), a recent African immigrant struggles to make a new life for himself while navigating through contemporary Berlin in director-co-writer Burhan Qurbani’s (We Are Young. We Are Strong.) frenetic, and visually stunning adaptation of Alfred Döblin’s 1929 novel. After surviving his perilous journey, Francis vows to be a good man, but he soon realizes how difficult it is to be righteous while undocumented in Germany–without papers, without a nationality, and without a work permit. When he receives an enticing offer for easy money from Reinhold (Albrecht Schuch), a neurotic, sex-addicted gangster who takes Francis under his wing, Francis initially resists temptation, but eventually he is sucked into Berlin's underworld. After Francis falls deeply in love with kind-hearted call girl Mieze (Jella Haase), his life finally seems to take a turn for the better. Reinhold, however, refuses to let go of his "protégé," and Francis’ his life spirals out of control.
