Director: Doris Dörrie, Screenplay: Doris Dörrie, Rolf Basedow, Ruth Stadler Germany, 1998, 120 min. German with English subtitles, digital. Drawing once more from her own short stories, Dörrie’s script presents an intricate and off-beat episodic narrative.  Shifting between Germany and Spain, interlacing plotlines in both locations, Dörrie intertwines the individual fates of an ensemble cast of extraordinarily unique characters:

Linda (Potente), a deaf mute who is hitchhiking her way through Andalusia, encounters Werner (Wöhler), a travelling salesman with a secret fetish. Franziska (Dobra) marries the wrong man, hoping to end her troubled love affair with Klaus (Wink), who wanders through the streets of Spain, mourning the loss of Franziska. Herbert (John), is confronted by drastic consequences of his affair Jessica (Romano), while Herbert’s wife Unna (Berger) reunites with her former lover David (Sander).
Plagued by either jealousy or extra-marital affairs, Weddings and domestic disputes, or both open and secret desires, each of these individuals all share one common desire: happiness.

Winner of the 1999 German Film Award for Best Female Lead (Franka Potente), and the 1998 Bavarian Film Award for Best Script.
