New Berlin Cinema - achtung berlin goes LA

Germany 2016, 79 min., German (with English subtitles)
Writer-Director: Julius Schultheiß, Cinematography: Martin Neumeyer, Editor: Anna Kappelmann, Producers: Julius Schultheiß, Gerold Dukat, finderlohn film (Berlin), Starring: Karin Hanczewski, Zita Aretz, Paul Matzke, Marc Ben Puch, Christine Knispel, Matthias Lamp

Lotte (Hanczewski) is an impulsive, rough around the edges nurse in her early thirties, whose chaotic life in Berlin leads her from one dysfunctional relationship to the next. Following an argument with her boyfriend, that ultimately leaves her without an apartment or a relationship, Lotte runs into a long-forgotten acquaintance Marcel (Matzke).  Just as Marcel recognizes her, Lotte flees, ultimately finding refuge in her friend Sabine’s flat. The following day, the encounter still weighs heavy on Lotte's mind  – even during her work at the hospital.
When a young girl, Greta (Aretz), is brought in to the hospital where she works, the otherwise coldhearted Lotte takes care of Greta’s injuries, and a gentle, almost sisterly affection forms between them.  Lotte’s life is once again turned upside down, as she witnesses Marcel and Greta together. Lotte’s emotional wounds are reopened, presenting her with a situation from which she cannot run away. Schultheiß' feature debut intertwines the individual development of the films protagonists through a masterful weaving of screenwriting and improvised dialogue, captured skillfully through the lens of cinematographer Neumeyer, creating an intricate portrait of Lotte, Greta and their lives.
