Discussions on the Legacy & Influence of Bauhaus in Los Angeles
Closing event for the exhibition bauhaus.photo, currently on view at the WUHO Gallery.
To mark the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Bauhaus, the Los Angeles Forum of Architecture and Urban Design hosts a panel discussion about the influence of Bauhaus (whether directly or obliquely) on current leading Los Angeles creatives from a number of disciplines.
Each panelist will juxtapose two images side-by-side: one from their own body of work and one produced by Bauhaus members, teachers, graduates, or practitioners. Panelists will highlight how the ideas, techniques, or principles embedded in the Bauhaus legacy might be seen as resonating with and informing their own work, as a way of raising issues, finding common themes, and provoking discussion on the current state of creativity in Los Angeles.
Participants:
Jessica Fleischmann: founder and creative director of Still Room, a graphic design and creative studio in LA, and co-founder of X Artists’ Books.
Andrea Lenardin Madden: Founder and principal of a l m project-a multidisciplinary studio based in LA, and contributor to “My Bauhaus- 100 Architects on the 100th Anniversary of a Myth” by Edition Detail.
Yunhee Min: LA-based artist with expertise in painting. Min’s staircase painting is currently on view at the Hammer Museum.
Heather Scott Peterson: Associate Professor of Interior Architecture, Woodbury University, LA is an artist, designer, and writer, specializing in sculpture, furniture, drawing, and artifacts.
Pae White: artist, based in LA. White’s sculpture, site-specific installations, tapestries, and paintings blur the traditional boundaries between the fine and applied arts, architecture, and design.
Moderator: Tim Durfee, principal of Tim Durfee Studio, is an architect and special curatorial advisor to the Getty Research Institute’s exhibition “Bauhaus Beginnings”, currently on view a the Getty Center.
The bauhaus.photo exhibition features 100 key works from the collection of more than 70,000 Bauhaus photos held by the Bauhaus-Archiv / Museum für Gestaltung in Berlin – the largest such collection in the world. The exhibition provides an impressive insight into the many facets of Bauhaus photography and life at the Bauhaus.
Presented as part of a series of programs by the Getty Research Institute, the Goethe-Institut Los Angeles, A+D Museum, and WUHO Woodbury University Hollywood Outpost that will unravel at multiple venues over the course of the year. “Bauhaus at the Getty” includes the exhibition Bauhaus Beginnings, the film series Bauhaus on Screen, and the digital project Bauhaus: Building the New Artist. The Goethe-Institut Los Angeles will present the interactive exhibition Virtual Bauhaus at A+D Museum and the photography exhibition bauhaus.photo at the WUHO Gallery.
Both Virtual Bauhaus and bauhaus.photo are presented as part of Wunderbar Together: The Year of German-American Friendship 2018/19- an initiative funded by the German Federal Foreign Office, implemented by the Goethe-Institut, and supported by the federation of German Industries (BDI).
