Summer 1979, Thüringen, East Germany.
For more than two years, The Strelzyk and Wetzel families have been working on an audacious plan: they want to flee East Germany in a homemade hot-air balloon. When the Strelzyk's first escape attempt ends with a crash-landing, just short of the border to West Germany, they are forced to return home. After finding traces of the attempted escape, the East German secret police, the Stasi, launches an investigation to find the would-be balloon makers. What follows is a cat and mouse game between the Stasi and the Strelzyks and Wetzels as the two families feverishly work to build a new escape balloon. Based on actual events, Herbig's box-office thriller was awarded the Friedenspreis des Deutschen Films, 2019.
