Presented by German Films and the German Federal Film Board (FFA), the 14th edition of this beloved annual showcase presents the year’s most promising young directors and outstanding student short films to international audiences and the film industry. The program combines new talents – the NEXT GENERATION of German Cinema – together with the best German shorts under 7 minutes – the winners of the FFA’s SHORT TIGER Award 2024.

The 11 short films for NEXT GENERATION SHORT TIGER 2024 were selected by an expert jury: director Sophie Linnenbaum (THE ORDINARIES), Alexandra Gramatke (Kurzfilm Agentur Hamburg) and Dr. Christian Bräuer (Yorck Cinemas, CICAE). They had to choose from 98 submissions from 19 German film schools and 18 additional shorts (up to 15 min) by independent producers that were preselected by members from the AG Kurzfilm.

Representing Germany’s diversity of forms, genres, and skillful filmmaking talent that international audiences have come to expect from German shorts, these deeply personal and universal stories confirm the notion that short film is an independent art form deserving of the big screen and the awareness of audiences worldwide.

BLACK YOUTH
Isaac Martínez  (Fiction, 2023, 4 min.)
BLACK YOUTH tells the story of young BIPoCs coming of age in a western world characterized by white heteronormative people and structures. A coming of age that is characterized by racism, grief, anger, hatred, the resulting violence, and exclusion, as well as the confrontation with one‘s own identity.

DON’T LET | GO LASS NICHT LOS
Antonia Lindner (Fiction, 2024, 14 min.)
Amir and Anouk are driving homewards after their first road trip together. High of their love they feel nothing can ruin their happiness until they are being stopped by the police.

GOOD FOR ME
Hannah Wolny (Fiction, 2023, 15 min.)
25-year-old Jules wants an abortion. Due to the closure of all the clinics in her area, she is forced to return to her childhood home. Although her parents welcome her with open arms, the 72 hours between the consultation and the procedure are increasingly filled with unspoken questions.

THE HIDDEN DIMENSION
Ben Galster (Documentary, 2023, 04:22 min.)
THE HIDDEN DIMENSION is an intimate portrait of queer photographer Leo Maki. A dreamlike journey into his mind that explores the artist’s life in Poland, the creative process behind his work and the embrace of his own sexuality.

I MAY ALWAYS ASK HER ANYTHING | ICH DARF SIE IMMER ALLES FRAGEN
Silke Schönfeld (Documentary, 2023, 04:22 min.)
The cutting down of a cherry tree becomes the starting point for an intimate dialog about transgenerational trauma between mother and daughter. The line between the need to investigate and the desire for healing becomes blurred while a persistent camera depicts the felling of the tree. The short documentary is an attempt to find a shared language for the unspeakable consequences of child sexual abuse within one‘s own family.

IT’S JUST A WHOLE

Bianca Scali (Animation, 2023, 11 min.)
She knew this day would come and the choice she’d have to make. But as it finally comes, Maya cannot wrap her head around it. A mole - it’s so small, so insignificant, just a mark... How can it be so hard to part from it? Can Maya ever feel whole again when a bit of her is taken away?

SENSITIVE CONTENT
Narges Kalhor (Experimental, 2023, 9 min.)
Behind the “sensitive content,“ behind this symbol of the crossed-out eyes, in this Deep Blur, two real eyes have been erased by the violence in the Middle East. This Deep Blur video is about the eyewitnesses who do not look away, who remain there, with their fainting eyes and their trembling hands, recording the “sensitive content.“ They are risking their lives, fighting for visibility

SUPERBUHEI
Josef Brandl (Fiction, 2023, 7 min.)
Jesse, an unsuccessful bar owner, is afraid.

WEEDING | KASSIEREN
